Bienvenidos !! Welcome !
Welcome to my E- portfolio for my Spanish Major at CSU Monterey Bay
Statement of purpose
I was two years old when I arrived in the United States. I started elementary school at 5 years old and as a first born not knowing English it was very difficult to learn and adapt to a different language and culture. Adapting to this new language was very difficult, I had to go through bullying because of my way of pronouncing, for having an accent that in English, it sounded “funny” like some of my classmates would tell me.
It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school when I first had my first Spanish class with Mrs. Martinez, and I fell in love with the language even more. I started to understand the culture behind my language, and I knew this was what I wanted to do in the future. Just by reading interested books like “Cajas de Carton” or “Senderos Fronterizos” by Francisco Jimenes, “Casa on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros got my attention and having a lot of connections with their stories made me get even more interested on knowing more about Spanish. This is where my interest in becoming a Spanish teacher started. I got motivated by my high school teacher and she inspired me to become a good Spanish teacher for high school students. Her way of teaching made it so fun and got our attention to learning, with reading, projects, lectures, movies, and music. My junior year in high school I took Spanish AP passing the exam with level 4.
After high school, I transferred two years to Hartnell College for Elementary school teacher however, in my second year I realized that Spanish was actually what I wanted to study and even though I had the opportunity to be an elementary teacher bilingual I only wanted to focus on Spanish, I change my whole major into only Spanish. A year later, I transferred to CSUMB with my AAT in Spanish, and I was going for my Bachelors in Spanish. Now, I am very happy with what I decided to study and I'm proud of myself for not letting those bullies bring me down for not knowing English. Two years later here I am about to get a bachelors.
